Councilwoman and Assembly Candidate Jodi Giglio (R,C,I) today announced her support of Republican Assembly proposal (A4088) which would help fix the state’s unemployment system-- helping East End residents who are out of work.
“For the last three years, this common-sense plan has faced roadblocks put in place by Assembly Democrats,” said Giglio. “Now more than ever, New Yorkers need a more business-friendly environment that allows our employers to reconstitute their workforce and puts workers back on the path of receiving employers’ paychecks, not government handouts.”
The Assembly Republican Conference has several proposals to fix the unemployment system including the Restructure New York Plan (A4088). Under this plan, enhancements to the unemployment system would be made to encourage people to return to work when conditions are safe but also provide a safety net for when they can’t go back by enhancing the income tax credit, allowing people to keep more of their income.
“As an Elected Official who has balanced budgets without ever voting to pierce the tax cap, I have a long-standing record of supporting local businesses and taxpayers,” said Giglio. “Now, as our local economy recovers from the economic impact of COVID-19, our district needs an advocate who will help people with a long-term solution of getting a paycheck from their employer rather than a check from the government-- which is short-term and unsustainable.“
“Literally, there are real signs of the East End’s COVID-19 economic recovery. As I travel through the district, I see more and more Help Wanted signs hung in the windows of businesses. As the owner of a successful small business, I understand our small business community needs a vibrant workforce and our state government should act quickly to help these small businesses stay alive,” said Giglio. “I understand reentering the workforce is sometimes difficult, given challenges with daycare and school reopening. But we are all in this together and every level of government should act swiftly to ensure the East End economy is allowed to thrive.”
“Unfortunately, our Governor did not see the urgency of putting money into the pockets of those who are in desperate need, waiting 10 days to apply for the Federal Government’s lay-off aid. Instead, he has prioritized political optics over the basic necessity of survival for NY State residents. If elected to the Assembly, I will always put my constituents over politics,” said Giglio.
