Alexis Weik wants to Save the William Floyd Statue

William Floyd was a founding father as a signer of Declaration of Independence. With the other signers, he pledged his life, fortune, and sacred honor to the cause of liberty and establishment of our great nation. We enjoy our freedom, liberties, and way of life because of the sacrifices of these Founder Fathers.

Slavery was truly tragic mistake and mark on history of our Republic. Many of these same men, including William Floyd, owned slaves. In 1799, New York State Senator William Floyd supported passage the Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery. This action led to the March 31, 1817 legislative action ending two centuries of slavery within its borders with the July 4, 1827 as the date of final emancipation and making New York the first state to pass a law for the total abolition of legal slavery.

The Tri-hamlet community has strong connection to William Floyd. His home, William Floyd Estate, is Mastic Beach. The school district is named in his honor. The primary road leading into the community bears his name. The statue stands at the community entrance. No man is without flaws. Certainly, owning slaves was tragic error. The community honors him for sacrifices and contribution to birth of our nation. Without which we may very well not being having this discussion. We must acknowledge his flaws and embrace his contribution. Let the community continue their tribute to the birth of our nation.
